Mineralogy

Smoky quartz is the gray-to-brown colored quartz variety. It shares the same basic mineral composition as clear quartz, rather than being topaz.

How Color Forms

Irradiation acting on aluminum-related defects produces smoky coloration. Both naturally occurring and artificially induced color must be considered when describing commercial material.

Varieties & Names

“Smoky topaz” is a misleading name for smoky quartz. Morion is used for very dark material; darkness is a color description, not a separate mineral species.

Localities

Smoky quartz is widespread; the Australian Museum records it in all Australian states. Neither color intensity nor a trade name proves the mining location of a bead.

Identification & Treatments

Irradiation can modify quartz color. A dark stone is not automatically untreated, and a photograph cannot distinguish natural irradiation from a commercial treatment. Request documented disclosure.

Care

For finished bead jewelry, begin with a soft cloth and follow the instructions for the whole piece, including cord, metal and any coatings. Avoid impacts and sudden heat changes. Do not use abrasive home authenticity tests; they can damage a finished surface.
